Some Travels, Tours Tips at Retirement
One of the best things about retirement is the availability of time. We can use the available time for travel or tour. Invariably, the travel or tour will take the retiree to places he/she dream of but have not been yet. In some cases, it could be places where he/she has been but the retiree wants to spend more un-pressured time to enjoy the place.
I loosely define tours as "organized travels". This is just for simplicity of this blog. Organized tours a good if you don't want to plan your trip. You will be herded from one place to another per a defined schedule. The meals are planned too. If you are adventurous, and you prefer to plan all the travel details yourself, DON"T go on an organized tour.
Here are some pointers for a retiree planning to travel or tour a place.
Pre-trip
1. Make reservation for your trip as soon as possible. It may be possible to bargain for a good discount if you book earlier.
2. Make reservation with a renowned travel company. There has been reports of travel agency closing shop without notice due to debts owned by the company.
3. Understand all the prerequisites of the place you are going. What's the tax, duty free allowance, temperatures, jabs, currency etc.
4. Buy travel insurance for the trip. Travel insurance is critical as it will cover all illness, hospitalization, loss of bags, and even hijacks. There is even an emergency SOS to call in case of evacuation.
5. Collect contact numbers of your local agents and medical emergencies in case you need their help to resolve any issues.
6. Keep yourself fit. If you need to have any jabs, do so at least one week before the start of the trip.
7. Pack a emergency medical kit with your luggage. This should include medication for stomach problems, gastric, pain killers, sore eyes, sore throat and even constipation. Hand synthesizer, masks and sun protection are also recommended.
8. Carry minimum credit cards and cash with you. Nowadays, travelers do not carry travelers' checks. You may need to carry an ATM card to draw on your bank back home.
On the trip
1. Enjoy yourself. However, be careful with indulging too much food. Space yourself and eat moderately.
2. Exercise to keep fit.
3. Communicate to a loved one in your home so they know where you are each day.
4. Don't play a hero. Don't stand out in a foreign place. Don't draw attention to yourself.
5. Should you need to go out on your own, please go around in groups. Don't explore alone.
6. Should you fall sick, call the hotel doctor or check in directly to the local hospital. This is needed after self medication fail to bring relief to your ailment.
Travels and tours are for enjoyment. Take some simple precaution and preparation and our travels and tours will fun and memorable. Enjoy!!
